2015 - A Day in Edinburgh

Edinburgh has a theatrical quality that comes from the city itself: dark stone, steep changes in level and a skyline of roofs, towers and spires. Buildings rise above one another, following the ground beneath them, and the view can change considerably within a short distance.

The Old Town’s narrow streets and passages contrast with the more ordered layout of the New Town. Together, they give Edinburgh a structure that is felt while moving through it: enclosed spaces give way to longer views, and the hills remain part of the city rather than a distant backdrop.

The stone gives much of Edinburgh its visual character. In shadow, façades can appear almost uniform; where light reaches them, windows, carvings and the texture of the masonry become distinct. The same building can feel heavy from one angle and sharply defined from another.

These photographs come from a day in Edinburgh in 2015. They form a brief record of the Scottish capital, with its architecture and uneven skyline setting the atmosphere of the visit.
